There are coaches in the NBA that win championships, others become legends. The separator? Well, it's being insanely competitive and pushing rosters to their limit despite not having stars on the court all of the time. Phil Jackson was able to do it with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Gregg Popovich made generational talents in different eras from David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Kawhi Leonard, and Victor Wembanyama. Pat Riley was able to create an insane Miami Heat culture after making the New York Knicks contenders. Steve Kerr's name now sits beside these greats after the Golden State Warriors' win over the Washington Wizards.
Kerr becomes an NBA all-time great in coaching wins
The Warriors head coach notched his 600th win. It took a lot of sacrifice and rough moments to get there but he made it. In fact, Kerr and Co. have not seen Stephen Curry play for nearly two months. They also lost five-straight games after notching his 599th win. More than that, Trae Young and the Wizards were starting to come back in this game. After all of that, the architect of the Warriors dynasty finally did it.
He got his 600th win after coaching 943 regular season games. Kerr becomes the fourth-fastest in NBA history to notch this milestone. Jackson was able to achieve it after just an insane 805 games. Riley did it in 832 while Popovich led the Spurs in 887 regular season fixture before he crossed that mark.
The Warriors head coach obviously was not thinking too much of the record. Coach Kerr primarily thought that the gap could have been wider if they had played better, via Noah Trister of The Associated Press.
"Not a great basketball game. But we needed the win and were good enough to get the win. It’s surreal to hear my name in that group, but I can tell you that one thing that bonds us all together — those names and mine — is talent. You can’t win in this league without great players, and I was blessed from the day I took this job with incredible talent," he said.
Coach Kerr is going to need more wins to keep the Warriors in postseason contention. They are currently the ninth seed in the Western Conference standings and need Curry to return as soon as possible to get out of the NBA Play-In Tournament race.
