Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently spoke about the onset of scripted promos in the company. He used to work as the head booker for the WWE.

Russo was part of the WWE creative team during the Attitude Era. He was instrumental in some of the most successful storylines for the company. He also worked as a head booker in WCW and Impact Wrestling. However, the veteran writer could not replicate the same success in these promotions.

This week on Writing with Russo, the veteran writer noted that he possibly started coming up with scripts in the WWE. However, he explained that the entire script was just created to regulate the show. He felt that as a writer, he needed to know the conversations and how they panned out to give a certain direction to every episode. However, after his departure, he felt the scripts became more integral to storylines to the point where wrestlers were handed out pieces of paper and asked to memorize their entire promos.

"Bro, the advent of the scripts probably started with me. But all the script was with me was as I'm writing the show, in my head, I need to know how the show is gonna play out. So I need to know what these conversations are going to be. So that's why when I handed it off, it was really like just bullet points of this is what the conversation needs to be. It went from that to full-blown memorize every freaking word."
