One of the most anticipated matchups of the women’s college basketball season will open the tournament’s Final Four, as No. 1 UConn looks to continue its undefeated streak against familiar foe No. 1 South Carolina on Friday night in Phoenix.

These two teams met in last year’s championship game, which resulted in an 82-59 Huskies rout over the Gamecocks. Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd, who are both still on this year’s UConn team, led all scorers with 24 points each. Strong complemented her outing with 15 rebounds, earning a double-double.

Dawn Staley and her squad are looking to avenge last year’s championship loss, and ending the Huskies’ current 54-game win streak would be an added bonus. The Gamecocks have cruised through this tournament, winning each of their four games by an average of 40 points (69-point win against Southern, 40-point win against USC, 26-point win against Oklahoma, 26-point win against TCU). South Carolina has been playing excellent basketball throughout this year’s tournament, but its biggest test will come Friday night.

Geno Auriemma’s Huskies have also had little trouble with opponents, winning their first four games by an average of 32.5 points (38-point win against UTSA, 53-point win against Syracuse, 21-point win against North Carolina, 18-point win against Notre Dame). UConn’s trio of Strong, Fudd, and Quinonez will look to continue their stellar play as the program seeks its third title game appearance in five seasons.

The winner of this game will face the victor of No. 1 Texas vs. No. 1 UCLA. The national championship is set for Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Phoenix.
