Veteran India batter Rohit Sharma endured a 2025 filled with both highs and lows. The year began on a difficult note when he dropped himself from the playing XI due to poor form in the fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney in early January, a match India eventually lost.
However, fortunes soon turned for the Mumbai cricketer as he led India to glory by winning the 2025 Champions Trophy on March 9, defeating New Zealand in the final. On May 7, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket, drawing the curtains on a 67-match career in the format, during which he amassed 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.
Another major development followed later in the year, ahead of the ODI series against Australia in October, when Rohit was removed from the captaincy and Shubman Gill was entrusted with the leadership role. Despite India losing the series 2-1, Rohit delivered standout performances and finished as the Player of the Series.
He continued to impress during the South Africa series and recently turned out for Mumbai in the ongoing 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 155 and 0 across two innings.
As 2025 draws to a close, despite facing several challenges, Rohit Sharma managed to leave a significant impact on the game. On that note, here’s a look at the top five records and milestones achieved by the 38-year-old in 2025.
#1 Rohit Sharma overtook Shahid Afridi to become the player with the most sixes in ODIs
On November 30, during the first ODI of the three-match series against South Africa in Ranchi, Rohit Sharma broke Shahid Afridi’s long-standing 15-year record to become the player with the most sixes in the 50-over format.
The former Pakistan all-rounder played 398 ODIs, scoring 8,064 runs and hitting 351 sixes. Meanwhile, Rohit, in 279 matches, has amassed 11,516 runs and smashed 355 maximums.
#2 Fourth captain in history to win Player of the Match in an ICC final
Earlier this year, during the 2025 Champions Trophy final, Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in helping India make history. Chasing 252 against New Zealand, the opening batter led from the front, scoring 76 off 83 balls with seven fours and three maximums, guiding India to a four-wicket victory and the championship.
Rohit was named Player of the Match, becoming only the fourth captain after Clive Lloyd (1975 ICC ODI World Cup), Ricky Ponting (2003 ICC ODI World Cup), and MS Dhoni (2011 ICC ODI World Cup) to win the accolade in an ICC tournament final.
#3 Third Indian to reach 50 international centuries
During the final game of the three-match ODI series against Australia, played on October 25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Rohit Sharma helped India secure a consolation victory after losing the first two matches. Chasing 237, the veteran opener smashed an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes, as India won by nine wickets.
Notably, this was Rohit Sharma’s 33rd ODI century and his 50th international century, making him only the third Indian to achieve this milestone after Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (84).
#4 Went past Virat Kohli and Kumar Sangakkara to become the visiting player with the most ODI centuries in Australia
With his unbeaten 121 against Australia in Sydney, Rohit Sharma notched his sixth ODI century in Australia, surpassing Virat Kohli and Kumar Sangakkara, who had five each, to become the visiting player with the most ODI centuries Down Under.
Overall, Rohit has played 33 ODIs in Australia, scoring 1,530 runs at an average of 56.66 with a strike rate of 89.89, including five fifties and six centuries to his credit.
#5 Second captain to win ICC titles in both ODI and T20I formats
Team India clinched the 2025 Champions Trophy under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, making him only the second captain to win ICC titles in both ODI and T20I formats, having previously led the Men in Blue to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The only other captain to achieve this feat is former India skipper MS Dhoni, who guided the Men in Blue to triumph in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
