Tigers expected to crush trade rumors surrounding Tarik Skubal after taking chance on No. 2 overall prospect for Opening Day roster

The Detroit Tigers have bet all their chips with their latest move, promoting their top prospect and No. 2 overall in Kevin McGonigle to the Major League roster ahead of Opening Day. With that in mind, it sets an interesting precedent.

That being the Tigers are all-in on winning a championship. And for FanSided’s Jake Elman, it means any rumors of Detroit’s two-time Cy Young ace Tarik Skubal getting dealt at the trade deadline should be squashed.

“If you were a contender hoping that Skubal would somehow be available come July 1, tough luck. The Tigers just confirmed that they’re going all-in, and it’s terrific…If the Tigers wanted to reaffirm their commitment to winning to Skubal, then they may have just succeeded in a massive way. Hinch said it best: The Tigers are trying to win the World Series, full stop. Look, I know that sounds obvious, especially considering that Skubal is only months away from free agency. But, again, think about how many times we’ve seen teams intentionally delay a prospect’s MLB debut just to get that extra year of control…The Tigers are fully open to taking the risk on McGonigle. Don’t listen to anyone who dismisses the idea that one game out of 162 doesn’t matter. They all matter,” Elman wrote.

In three seasons in the minors, McGonigle has slashed .308/.410/.512/.922 with 51 doubles, 25 home runs, 130 RBI, and 40 stolen bases in 183 games played. As for his 2026 Spring Training stats, he hit .250/.411/.477/.888 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, six RBI and two stolen bases in 20 games.

It seems like McGonigle is ready for the big leagues, and promoting him shows the Tigers are serious about winning. They went out and got some big free agents, made some deals, and now have their top prospect in the lineup.

Taking that into account, any idea that Skubal will be dealt seems unlikely. So, hopefully, the Tigers make it all the way and give Skubal and fans a good memory for him to walk from.
