Analyst offers incredibly optimistic Commanders 2026 projection

1 hour ago 2

The Washington Commanders are tough to get a read on this offseason, and that is even after their free agency splurge.

With several key defensive signings, Dan Quinn clearly wanted to bolster that side of the ball, but offensively, there isn't too much to get excited about aside from Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin.

The Commanders hope the injury bug stays away from their star quarterback, because everything in 2026 starts and stops with him.

But how far could this Commanders team, as it is currently constructed, go in 2026?

Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr has Washington at No. 13 in his latest power rankings, with a huge projection for 2026.

"I was critical of the Commanders' offseason last year," Orr wrote. "This year, I feel like the team’s moves better align with the franchise’s growth rate. Tight end Chig Okonkwo could be a menace in this offense if used correctly, and adding both Leo Chenal and K’Lavon Chaisson shows me that Dan Quinn plans to really alter how Washington is going to pressure opposing quarterbacks next season.

"I see Washington slotting right back into contender mode, having added the right pieces rather than splashy ones this winter."

Commanders contenders?

Of course, these lists are subjective, but is Washington a contender?

McLaurin is the only genuine weapon, teams will fear. Behind him are Treylon Burks, Van Jefferson, and Dyami Brown. Is that a group of a contender?

Plus, at running back, Rachaad White and Jerome Ford. Is that contender worthy?

Yes, defensively, Washington should be far better, but the offense, at least in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired, even with Daniels. Now that could change if someone like Brandon Aiyuk is signed, or Washington drafts Jeremiyah Live or Carnell Tate.

But right now, I struggle to see the Commanders as a contender.
