Resources are not easy to get in The Last Caretaker. You don't get materials in the traditional survival game manner; they can’t be mined or gathered from loot. Instead, you must dismantle the old debris and technologies in the world around you and turn them into usable crafting materials.
In this guide, we will break down how you can get scraps and materials in The Last Caretaker. We will also discuss the resources you will need the most and their sources in the game.
The Last Caretaker: How do Scraps and Materials work?
Unlike most Survival Games, you don't get materials from around you in The Last Caretaker. While some locations like abandoned campsites, shipwrecks, and broken machinery can have a few pieces of materials lying about, the primary method of acquiring resources in the game is by breaking things down into scraps. These scraps can then be processed into crafting materials using the Recycler.
So the crafting loop of The Last Caretaker is: dismantle > process > craft. But to begin this, you must get a specific tool in the early game.
How to get the Dismantle tool in The Last Caretaker
You must get the Dismantle Tool skill as soon as you reach level 2 (Image via Channel37)The most essential tool for you in The Last Caretaker is the Dismantle Tool. This helps you by breaking down objects into usable scraps. The Dismantle Tool is unlocked at level 2 and can be activated free of cost in your skill list.
As soon as you gain level 2, activate the skill to begin gathering scrap in The Last Caretaker.
To access the Dismantle Tool:
- Go to your Tool Menu (Default key: T).
- For faster access, assign the Dismantle Tool to your hotbar by simply right-clicking on it.
This tool allows you to target any object in the vicinity that is not attached to the ground. Different objects in the game take different amounts of time to be dismantled. Dismantling consumes a certain amount of energy depending upon the object.
This process may feel slow in the beginning, so put your Enhancer Points (skill points) into the Scrapper stat to make the process faster and more efficient.
How to use the Recycler
The Recycler is the most vital machinery you will have in your arsenal (Image via Channel37)The crafting recipe of the Recycler unlocks once you have made it to level 4, but lucky for you, the starter boat already comes with an equipped Recycler.
The Recycler is used to process the collected scraps into usable crafting materials.
To power up the Recycler, use the left-side switch. Once it's powered up, the Recycler is ready to produce materials.
You will find these usable materials on the right side of the Recycler. Once you have crafted multiple Recyclers, the production rate of your materials gets much higher and allows for a much more efficient crafting journey in The Last Caretaker.
What's the best recycling strategy once you find Fabricated Parts?
To craft the most advanced recipes in The Last Caretaker, you must acquire Fabricated Parts rather than raw materials from the Recycler. These parts can be used to make complex machinery, such as solar panels, weapons, or turbines.
The crafting system of The Last Caretaker smartly handles this. If you have the recipe unlocked, you can dismantle finished items to retrieve Fabricated Parts. In case the item is damaged, only a few Fabricated Parts can be acquired from them. This means if you find a Turbine out in the world and you dismantle it, you will acquire all the necessary parts to build it yourself.
If you have an excess of these parts or are short on raw materials, these Fabricated Parts can be fed to the Recycler to get raw materials.

Getting the Scrapper stat upgraded as soon as you can allows you to lower power consumption while dismantling, increasing your overall efficiency. In the early game, you don't need to craft a Recycler as your boat comes equipped with one. Periodically clear out your Recycler output area, as it stops material from spawning in. Finally, if you have any unused high-tier parts, scrap them for rare resource materials.
