The Miami Dolphins have benched Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins decided after their elimination from playoff contention and will now proceed with rookie QB Quinn Ewers for the rest of the season. Zach Wilson will serve as QB2 while Tagovailoa is the emergency QB3. Tagovailoa is currently on a four-year, $212.4 million contract signed ahead of the 2024 season.
Speaking on the 'Ross Tucker Podcast', Greg Cosell exposed a key flaw in the Alabama product's game.
"Tua is, for the most part, a pre-snap quarterback. That's basically ALL Tua can do," said Cosell.•

Tua Tagovailoa has spent six seasons with the Dolphins. The team drafted him with the fifth pick of the 2020 draft, and he was viewed as the team's next superstar shot caller. However, his time in Miami has seen mixed results.
Tagovailoa has led the team to two playoff berths. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2023 and led the league in passing yards for the campaign. However, he's also failed to reach the playoffs in four seasons. He's now set to be the most expensive third-string quarterback in NFL history.
Tua Tagovailoa faces an uncertain future in Miami
The Miami Dolphins have a big decision to make in the offseason. They need to figure out whether they're going to trade, release, or roll with Tagovailoa for the 2026 campaign.
Figuring out a trade partner for Tagovailoa might be the toughest option. His injury history, contract length, and the millions owed might be a hurdle for any interested team. Furthermore, most teams already have their QB of the present and future currently under contract.
The Dolphins could release Tagovailoa and proceed to eat millions in dead cap for the next few seasons. According to Fox Sports, cutting the one-time Pro Bowler next year before June 1 would lead to a $99.2 million dead cap charge. If it is designated as a post-June 1 release, those charges are split over two seasons with $67.4 million allocated to the 2026 cap and $31.8 million in 2027.
Another option is rolling with the left-handed QB for the 2026 campaign. The Dolphins could be getting Tyreek Hill back from injury, and that should help his QB's productivity. Furthermore, some smart offseason moves could work magic in improving the team's fortunes.
Whatever the case may be, Tua Tagovailoa is under the most pressure in his professional football career. There's a good chance that he's played his last game in a Miami jersey.
