Texans make $37.5 million signing before free agency officially opens

Before free agency even began, the Houston Texans made a $37.5 million commitment.

Because teams can negotiate with the players who just completed a season on their own roster, it was a good chance for Houston to prevent a key player from reaching the open market at all.

The news, reported by Texans reporter Aaron Wilson, is that Houston has signed offensive guard Ed Ingram to a three-year contract worth $37.5 million, with the deal coming overnight Sunday into Monday.

Ingram was originally a second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, but now he'll be with the Texans for the next few years. He actually wasn't going to hit free agency until next season, but this removes any question of where his future lies.

The Texans did recently trade away lineman Tytus Howard, so ensuring Ingram returns is a way to keep some continuity in the unit in front of C.J. Stroud.

Ingram was a priority for the Texans, Wilson reports.

“Ed had a great year,” Texans GM Nick Caserio said at the NFL Combine. “Honestly, he probably had the best year of his career. For the most part, he was out there. He missed a couple games there with injuries. But he’s a good kid. He’s strong. He’s physical. He plays violent in the running game. You saw that on tape quite a bit. Pretty good in pass protection."

The Texans appear to have gotten a bargain in Ingram initially from his acquisition from Minnesota. It cost just a sixth-round pick from Houston to the Vikings to get Ingram last season after he had lost his starting job up north.

Now, Ingram has his long-term NFL home.
