Team Canada's Macklin Celebrini chasing Hooley Smith's 1924 Olympics record

Macklin Celebrini became the first NHL player to score on a penalty shot at the Winter Olympics.

That's a cool bit of history as the Team Canada 19-year old superstar from the San Jose Sharks chases another record, one that admittedly is pretty much unbreakable.

It was a funny tidbit to find out on Sunday, though.

It stems from the fact that Celebrini has already scored four goals at these Olympics. He must be approaching Canada's record for a player 20-or-under in a single Games, right?

Wrong.

In 1924, Hooley Smith scored 17 goals for Canada in five games.

Yeah, that's not getting caught.

Macklin Celebrini with four goals so far.

Has a ways to go to match the U20 goal scoring record at the Olympics. That, was -- as we all know -- set by Canadian Hooley Smith back in 1924. He had 17 in five games.

Smith was 20 at those Olympics, in which Canada won the gold medal, as you'd have expected.

He spent time playing for for the Toronto Granites, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons, Boston Bruins and New York Americans.

Reginal Joseph "Hooley" Smith may won two Stanley Cups, as well, and he may have been the first NHL player to wear a helmet.

Smith was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.

Celebrini's got a long way to go for any of those accomplishments, but he's certainly doing his best to make an early mark.
