Devin Booker has spent his entire ten-year career with the Phoenix Suns after the organization selected him 13th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft. The pick has paid off as he has made four All-Star appearances and helped lead the organization to their third NBA Finals appearance in 2020-21.
While the Suns appeared to be a legitimate contender after pairing Booker with Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, things have not gone as planned. Phoenix was swept in the first round of the playoffs in the trios first season together and failed to make the postseason entirely in 2024-25.
As the organization moves on to their fourth head coach in as many seasons, major changes are expected to follow. While Beal's contract and no trade clause make him difficult to move, Durant's time in Phoenix appears to be coming to an end as the team looks to get under the second apron.
Despite speculation that Booker could also be made available, it appears the Suns front office has different plans for their long-time star. A recent report from NBA insider Marc Stein revealed that Phoenix is preparing to offer Booker an extension that could make him the highest-paid player on a yearly basis in NBA history.

"REPORT: The Suns are expected to offer Devin Booker a 2-year, $150M extension, per @TheSteinLine."
Booker is coming off a season where he averaged 25.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.2 blocks per game while shooting 46.1% from the field, 33.2% from three-point range and 89.4% from the free-throw line. While it is no surprise that the Suns want to keep him long-term, there have been plenty of questions about whether paying him $75 million annually is the right move.
Phoenix does not control their own draft capital, which would make it difficult to build around Booker. Meanwhile, they are unlikely to fetch a massive haul for Durant as he will be 37 when next season begins and has just one year remaining on his contract.
The Suns future outlook leads many to question whether or not the extension for Booker is the right move as he would likely bring back a solid return in a trade. As we saw with the Dallas Mavericks and Luka Dončić, however, trading a homegrown star has the potential to alienate the fanbase.
