With roughly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.
And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least two teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs terminated.
Only one of those streaks ended on the field, however. The Alcoa [TN] Tornadoes had won 22 straight games heading into their regular-season finale against the Anderson County [Clinton, TN] Mavericks, including their first nine games of 2025. But that streak came to an end on the road as the Mavericks won a 31-30 stunner against the East Tennessee kingpins.
The other streak that ended this week came off the field, as the North Point [Waldorf, MD] Eagles saw their 17-game run ended due to an ineligible player who participated in the first seven games of the season.
Last week's Streak Busters
Alcoa's long streak dated back to the second game of 2024
Alcoa's 22-game run dated back to the second week of the 2024 season when the Tornadoes slipped past the Bearden [Knoxville, TN] Bulldogs, 24-22, a week after losing to the Ravenwood [Brentwood, TN] Raptors by the same margin in a 19-17 defeat in the season opener. Following the win over Bearden, the Tornadoes ripped through the rest of their schedule mostly unchallenged with only the archrival Maryville [TN] Red Rebels managing to stay within a touchdown in a 24-17 decision.
The run by the Tornadoes culminated in a Tennessee TSSAA Class 3A Division I state championship in a 40-21 rout of the Westview [Martin, TN] Chargers in the title game.
The end of North Point's 17-game win streak was more controversial as the Eagles had won every game since October 10, 2024, when they defeated the St. Charles [Waldorf, MD] Spartans, 21-0. That was one week after a double-overtime 20-17 loss to the Calvert [Prince Frederick, MD] Cavaliers. That would prove to be the Eagles' final loss of 2024 in a 12-2 season that ended with a Maryland MPSSAA 4A/3A state championship in a 21-20 win over the Mergenthaler Vo-Tech [Baltimore, MD] Mustangs.
The streak had continued through the first eight games of 2025 — at least until the results of an investigation revealed that the Eagles had played an ineligible player in its first seven games. The player in question was found to be attending the school without proper residency documentation, and under the guidelines of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, North Point was forced to vacate all of its 2025 wins prior to their October 24 victory over the Westlake [Waldorf, MD] Wolverines.
Ultimately, that reset the Eagles' record from 8-0 to 1-7, although they won last Friday night over St. Charles to get to 2-7 with one game remaining against the Arundel [Gambrills, MD] Wildcats.
