Why Jets' pair of deadline blockbuster trades are great for New York's future

The New York Jets made five trades in the middle of the season by the 2025 NFL trade deadline. Those five trades ranged from small deals for depth pieces to massive blockbusters that altered the course of the franchise.

Of those trades, the Jets sending Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts and Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys were by far the two biggest. Both of those moves are tough pills to swallow in the moment.

But both of those moves are great trades for the Jets. Even though the loss of both Williams and Gardner hurt, the Jets are better set up for future success than they were before deadline day.

There are a few key reasons why the Jets' 2025 deadline moves are great for the future, but the future draft capital that Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team shared on Twitter/X highlights just why the Jets' trade deadline decisions were right.

New York is coming out of the 2025 trade deadline with a king's ransom of draft picks in the next two draft classes.

In 2026, the Jets will have their own first-round pick, along with the Colts' first-rounder from the Gardner trade. In the second round, they have their own second and the Dallas Cowboys' second.

In 2027, the Jets own three first-round picks. Their own first, the first rounder of the Colts, and whichever first rounder between the Cowboys and Green Bay Packers winds up being higher.

In the next two draft classes, the Jets own five first-round picks and three second-round picks. All of that ammo will come in handy for Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn.

Not only could those extra first-rounders turn into core players for years to come on cheap rookie deals like Armand Membou, but the Jets could also use those first-rounders to acquire a franchise quarterback in a trade-up in the draft if necessary.

The Jets have struggled to find a franchise quarterback, and now, with five first-rounders in the next two drafts at their disposal, the Jets can swing for the fences for a franchise quarterback if needed.

But, if by chance the Jets land the first overall pick, they could select their new franchise quarterback while having plenty of high draft picks to build a strong roster around him.

The 2027 NFL Draft is also going to be a huge one, as there are plenty of intriguing quarterback options coming out. There is also expected to be a couple of star wide receivers, a position the Jets are looking to improve.

With the future in mind, the Jets' trades of Gardner and Williams are hugely beneficial for the Jets. Glenn and Mougey have a lot of ammo for a rebuild, and it should be an exciting one based on their trade deadline moves in 2025.
