Steve Young penned a tribute message to John Brodie on Sunday, two days after the former 49ers quarterback passed away.
Young took to his Instagram page to deliver the homage, sharing a picture of Brodie from his playing days with a touching caption.
“Sending love and prayers to his friends & family,” Young wrote beside the photo, which showed Brodie being carried off the field on the shoulders of others.
“What a legend ❤️.”
Brodie died on Friday at 90 years old.
Brodie joined the Niners in 1957 after he was taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, and he went on to play nearly two decades for the team.
His best season came in 1970, when he won league MVP honors.
In announcing Brodie’s passing, Niners co-chairman Dr. John York called him “one of the franchise’s all-time great players.”
“As a kid,” York said in a statement, “my 49ers fandom began by watching John play quarterback on television.
“He displayed an incredible commitment towards his teammates and his support of the organization never wavered after his playing days. John became a dear friend of mine, and he will always be remembered as an important part of 49ers history.”
Brodie’s final season with the Niners was 1973. Young began his San Francisco tenure in 1987.
