Steph Curry and Warriors reportedly eyeing a familiar face after failed LeBron James’ pursuit

The Golden State Warriors have spent this offseason watching other teams make the big moves. Steve Kerr’s roster missed out on LeBron James, and the front office has mostly stood pat as Steph Curry enters the later stages of his career.

But that quiet approach may not be the full story. According to a new report, Golden State has not ruled out bringing back a familiar face if the right opportunity arises this season.

Warriors would reportedly welcome a Kevin Durant reunion

The update comes from Clutch Points insider Brett Siegel. Sources told Siegel the organization has not fully moved on from the idea of reuniting Curry with Kevin Durant, the two-time Finals MVP who left the Bay Area in 2019.

The Rockets are entering the 2026-27 season looking to contend in the West. If that push falls short, Durant’s situation could change quickly—and Golden State would reportedly be ready to act.

The Warriors already made a serious push for LeBron James this summer, with Curry and Draymond Green both involved in the recruiting effort before James chose the 76ers instead. Golden State also enters the year still waiting on Jimmy Butler, who tore his ACL in January and has no firm timetable to return.

“The organization has not completely moved on from the idea of one day reuniting Curry with former Warrior and two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant,” Siegel wrote. “Lacob and the Warriors would welcome Durant back with open arms."

Kevin Durant already had a blunt response to James picking the 76ers over the Warriors, reflecting how closely the league is watching Golden State's roster moves. The Warriors have also been floated in Jonathan Kuminga sign and trade talks as they try to add depth around Curry.

Kerr later downplayed how close the team actually was to landing James, telling reporters the pursuit never felt as realistic as the rumors suggested.

“I didn’t even think we were realistically in the running for LeBron,” Kerr said. “It’s just that everyone kept saying we were. It never seemed serious to me despite all the reports.”

For now, the Warriors are running it back with the same core that missed the playoffs last spring, led by Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, and Kristaps Porzingis. Whether that changes depends on how the Rockets' season unfolds and whether Durant's name becomes available again before the trade deadline.
