Steelers losing OC Arthur Smith to prestigious college football job

1 hour ago 2

The Pittsburgh Steelers got their new head coach on Saturday with the hiring of Mike McCarthy.

Just hours later, their incumbent offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, shipped off for a new gig.

Smith is set to be the new offensive coordinator at Ohio State, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"Smith has received multiple requests for NFL HC and OC interviews this cycle," Rapoport writes. "Smith has engineered multiple top 10 offenses in the NFL, and now he lands in college."

Smith will be taking over for Brian Hartline, an expert recruiter and WR guru who left the Buckeyes to become the head coach at South Floria.

With Ohio State, Smith will work under head coach Ryan Day, who is also an offensive mind himself.

It makes some sense that Smith wouldn't stay in Pittsburgh. McCarthy is an offensive-minded head coach who likely has his own ideas and coaches he wants to bring with him.

Smith made the most of odd personnel in Pittsburgh in 2025, using all sorts of TE-heavy formations to make up for a lack of wide receivers beyond DK Metcalf.

He's been a head coach in the NFL before, and it's interesting to see Smith head for a college gig that could at least temporarily change his career trajectory.

Clearly, there isn't much of a better job opportunity than to be the OC at Ohio State.

Smith will inherit Heisman finalist QB Julian Sayin and superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, along with stud freshman RB Bo Jackson who will be getting ready for his second season in Columbus.

There could be a lot of points scored yet again by the Buckeyes next season.
