Steelers could add Pro Bowl QB out of retirement instead of Aaron Rodgers

If Aaron Rodgers decides not to come to Pittsburgh, the Steelers don't have tons of veteran alternatives.

But a new name floated out there recently that could help the quarterback situation at least a little bit.

SI's Jeremy Brener threw out the idea of Pittsburgh signing Ryan Tannehill.

The former Titans Pro Bowler didn't play in 2024 but isn't officially on the NFL's retirement list.

Tannehill is 36 now, and while he wouldn't be a shoo-in as a starter, he'd add to a depth chart that will likely also feature Mason Rudolph and rookie Will Howard.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers make sense with former Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in the same position with the team," Brener writes.

Tannehill played his first six NFL seasons with the Dolphins (and was there for seven seasons including an injury) and then added five years with the Titans.

As an NFL starting QB, his career record is 81-70. He improved as his career went on, holding a 39-24 record with Tennessee.

Tannehill has 216 career TD passes and 115 interceptions.

The Steelers have been suggested as a possible trade partner for Kirk Cousins if they don't get Rodgers.

Both in terms of acquisition cost and contract, Tannehill would come a lot cheaper than the others, if that plays a role in the final decision.

Brener also lists the Saints as a possible Tannehill destination, so stay tuned for what the former No. 8 overall pick might do next.
