Sophie Cunningham gave the Fever exactly what they needed in win over Golden State

For most of Friday night, the spotlight inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse naturally followed Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. Clark dazzled with 22 points and nine assists. Boston completely controlled the paint with 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Indiana Fever stars delivered exactly what fans expected in a huge 90-82 win over the Golden State Valkyries.

But the performance that may matter most long term came from Sophie Cunningham. Because this game felt like another reminder that Cunningham is becoming one of the most important pieces on Indiana’s roster. The Fever did not need her to score 25 points or dominate the ball. They needed energy. Toughness. Spacing. Confidence. Winning plays.

She gave them all of it. Cunningham finished with 11 points in 28 minutes while knocking down a pair of three-pointers and helping stabilize Indiana’s second unit throughout the night. More importantly, the Fever looked sharper offensively whenever she was on the floor. That is becoming a trend.

Sophie Cunningham is giving Indiana balance

The Fever already knew Clark and Boston could carry massive offensive responsibility. The bigger concern entering the season was whether Indiana had enough reliable complementary players around them to become a legitimate contender instead of simply an entertaining team.

That is where Cunningham changes everything. She does not force offense. She understands spacing. She cuts hard, moves without the ball, and plays with an edge that immediately changes Indiana’s energy level. Opponents cannot completely collapse defensively toward Clark when Cunningham is confidently attacking and knocking down shots.

And when Kelsey Mitchell is also scoring 19 points like she did Friday night, Indiana suddenly becomes extremely difficult to guard. That balance is what the Fever have been searching for.

Indiana suddenly looks much deeper than last season

One of the biggest problems for Indiana last season was how heavily everything depended on Clark creating magic offensively. When teams trapped her aggressively or forced the ball out of her hands, the offense could become stagnant. That is not happening nearly as often right now because the Fever finally have multiple players capable of punishing defenses.

Cunningham has become a huge part of that equation. Coming into Friday’s game, she was already averaging 8.2 points per contest while shooting confidently from deep and bringing physicality to Indiana’s rotation. Her 17-point performance against Seattle earlier this season showed flashes of what she could provide offensively.

Friday felt different, though. This performance felt comfortable. Controlled. Necessary. The Fever looked like a team beginning to understand how dangerous they can become when all their pieces fit together.

The Fever are starting to feel dangerous

There is still plenty for Indiana to clean up. Clark committed six turnovers Friday. Defensive consistency remains a work in progress. The Fever are not suddenly a finished product after one win in May.

But something about this group feels different compared to earlier stages of the rebuild. There is more confidence throughout the roster. More shooting. More toughness. More players capable of changing momentum quickly.

Cunningham embodies all of that. And if she continues playing this kind of role alongside Clark, Boston, and Mitchell, Indiana may finally have the roster balance needed to become a serious problem in the WNBA.
