Released on December 25, 2025, Song Sung Blue is a biographical musical drama film written and directed by Craig Brewer. It is based on a true story first told in the same-titled 2008 documentary about two ordinary people who dream of becoming musicians.

What is Song Sung Blue about, and what is it based on?

Song Sung Blue tells the tragic true story of a Milwaukee couple, Mike and Claire Sardina. It follows two musicians who meet and decide to form a tribute band called "Lightning & Thunder" to honor their musical hero, Neil Diamond.

The story shows how the couple found hope by performing the famous songs of the legendary American singer. Mike and Claire spent years traveling to small bars and fairs to sing Neil Diamond’s hits like Sweet Caroline and Forever in Blue Jeans. While Claire originally performed as Patsy Cline, she joined Mike to help him fulfill his dream of being a Neil Diamond "interpreter."

Song Sung Blue also explores the difficult parts of their lives, including a tragic car accident that caused Claire to lose part of her leg. Even through health problems and money struggles, they stayed together and continued to perform. It is a moving story about how the music of Neil Diamond brought a working-class couple together and helped them stay strong through many years of hard times.
