Socialism’s threat to America: Letters to the Editor — Nov. 19, 2025

The Issue: Increasing support for socialism amid New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s win.

All of you who smugly vote for socialists should heed Margaret Thatcher’s words of wisdom: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money (“Socialist NYC? Yes we ‘Khan,’ ” Nov. 15).”

This is the most basic flaw in socialism’s economic structure.

It will never succeed in New York City or anywhere else.

Betty Schwartz

Livingston, NJ

It seems that New Yorkers suffer from not knowing history and economics.

Too many ignorant people are voting in too many ignorant politicians.

Millions of the illegal immigrants who flooded the United States were escaping from socialism in South America, Central America and Cuba.

Socialism is a system that makes everyone poor except for those in control.

Meanwhile, capitalism is the best source of social justice ever devised by man; no other system comes close.

Hopefully New Yorkers can figure this out before their state nearly goes bankrupt again.

I don’t think the federal government will bail them out this time.

Jay Lindquist

Great Bend, Kan.

Today’s Gen Z voters do not know what communism or socialism really are.

They don’t know what the Holocaust and World War II were about.

Undereducated voters just know what the word “free” means, and if they don’t get it, they will riot.

Michael Shapiro

Massapequa

Trump says, “If you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.”

It’s strange he doesn’t know the difference between a socialist and a communist.

That’s like the difference between Bernie Sanders and Joseph Stalin. Quite a distance between the two, really.

On the other hand, Trump says he likes Chinese communist Xi Jinping “a lot.”

My head is spinning.

Kimball Shinkoskey

Woods Cross, Utah

It must be very confusing for young voters today.

They’re told that with capitalism, you do as well in life as the effort you put forth, whereas with socialism, everyone receives the same treatment — effort or not — which must seem a lot fairer.

What they don’t understand is where the money to pay for this comes from.

I guess we’ll see how successful Mamdani is as mayor with his plans for a socialist utopia.

Angela Lennox-Kay

Hackettstown, NJ

It’s a sad state of affairs for New Yorkers with Mamdani about to become mayor.

Residents are moving out of the city with fears of impending socialism, and Jewish people are applying for gun permits.

The Issue: The BBC airing deceptively edited footage of President Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021 speech.

President Trump is threatening to sue the BBC for editing his Jan. 6, 2021 speech to make it look like he incited the violent Capitol riot (“Sorry, not $orry: BBC to Trump,” Nov. 14).

The Jan. 6 committee, which did similar editing of evidence and withheld evidence to make Trump look bad, should be held accountable next.

After the BBC’s editing of Trump’s speech, I want to propose a new name for the vaunted public broadcaster: Big Biased Chatterbox.

David Tulanian

The BBC — London’s version of NPR, MSNBC and CNN wrapped into one — was caught editing one of Trump’s speeches.

It’s ironic that the United Kingdom makes several arrests daily for hate speech, yet officials are “mum” about this slanderous Panorama documentary on Trump.
