Kevin Durant began his NBA career for a team that no longer exists.
The Seattle SuperSonics made KD the No. 2 overall pick out of Texas in the 2007 NBA Draft. Durant got just a single season in Seattle before the franchise left and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Now, though, there's a chance of an incredible reunion.
Seattle is in the race to be a new NBA expansion franchise, along with Las Vegas. If a team returns to Seattle, it'd be logical for them to be called the Sonics once again and bring back much of the nostalgic, sentimental feel.
They'd also have the chance to bring back KD.
On the current timeline, there's a decent chance the Sonics would begin play in the 2028-29 season.
That's also the season before which Durant's current contract sets him up to be an unrestricted free agent.
Durant back to Seattle? It could really happen.
Kevin Durant will become an unrestricted free agent potentially for the final time in his career at the same time his first team, the Seattle SuperSonics, could return in 2028-29.

Clearly, a lot could change between now and then. The expansion timeline or locations could shift. Durant could retire, or sign an extension somewhere, or simply choose that he doesn't want to end his career with an expansion team.
But there'd be something incredibly full circle about Durant playing for the SuperSonics once again. Sports fans in Seattle would certainly love it.
