Sean Miller coaching timeline: How many teams Texas HC has coached and career record

1 hour ago 3

Sean Miller’s coaching career has been a bit of a roller coaster, featuring high highs and low, controversial lows.

Now, Miller is leading Texas as he aims to take the Longhorns back to the Final Four. The veteran coach has been leading teams for more than two decades but has not seen the same level of success as his peers.

While Miller has had his fair share of issues, including vacated wins, he has also found success everywhere he’s coached since his first year as a head coach. Here’s a look back at Miller’s coaching career to this point.

Sean Miller teams coached

Sean Miller has been the head coach of three different college teams since he got started in 2004. He began his head coaching career at Xavier from 2004 to 2009 and returned to coach the Musketeers from 2022 to 2025.

In between stints at Xavier, Miller was the head coach at Arizona from 2009 to 2021, a tenure that proved to be tumultuous. After his second stint with the Musketeers, he took the job to lead the Texas men’s basketball team in 2025, marking the third different program he has coached.

2004-2009: Xavier

Miller got his first head coaching job in 2004, when he was promoted to the position and replaced Thad Matta, who took a job at Ohio State. The Musketeers were coming off four straight NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2004.

Miller maintained that success, leading Xavier to the NCAA tournament in four of his five seasons as head coach. His best season came in 2007-08, when the Musketeers won 30 games for the only time in program history and returned to the Elite Eight as a No. 3 seed.

2010-2021: Arizona

At the complicated end of Lute Olson’s tenure with Arizona, the Wildcats had two head coaches in two years before hiring Miller away from Xavier in 2010. While Miller initially missed the NCAA tournament in two of his first three seasons with Arizona, he later developed the team into a perennial contender.

From 2013 to 2018, Miller led the Wildcats to four Pac-12 regular-season titles, three conference tournament championships, and three No. 1 or No. 2 seeds in the NCAA tournament. However, Arizona never made the Final Four under Miller, despite reaching the Elite Eight three times, including back-to-back losses to Wisconsin in 2014 and 2015.

Miller’s time in Tucson ended in disappointment and controversy. He was caught up in an FBI investigation into college basketball corruption, which resulted in vacated wins from 2016-18.

2022-25: Xavier

Miller sat out for a season before returning to Xavier in 2022 for his second stint as head coach. The Musketeers missed the previous three NCAA tournaments, and Xavier was hoping to get back to its winning ways.

In three seasons, Miller brought Xavier to two NCAA tournaments and a trip to the Sweet 16 as a No. 3 seed in 2023. Miller was only at Xavier for three seasons his second time around, but he wasn't as successful as his first stint when he won over 70 percent of his games.

2025-Present: Texas

Miller left Xavier for a second time to take over the Texas basketball program in 2025. The Longhorns had been through a bit of an unstable time, but still made five-straight NCAA tournament appearances leading into Miller's hiring.

In his first season at Texas, Miller led the Longhorns to a 20-win season and an NCAA tournament appearance that included winning a First Four game and making the Sweet 16.
