It's never a fun thing when a franchise quarterback goes down, but the sting hurts a little bit less when the team's backup quarterback is strong. That's just what happened when Drew Lock stepped in for an injured Sam Darnold during the Seattle Seahawks' season opener against the New England Patriots.
Darnold was out early in the game, on the opening drive on his fifth play of the game. So, Lock took over early, and he helped this team pull off a close, but winning, 13-10 final score.
During the game, Lock completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. It was good enough to get the win, and that's what counts. Now, the NFL's Week 2 is upon us.
Seattle Seahawks teammates trust Drew Lock, and that means something
So, what do the Seahawks think of Lock now that they're going into another game with him? Yes, Lock is starting with Darnold out against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, and his teammates are apparently okay with that.
In a feature from ESPN on Friday, Brady Henderson reiterates the idea that the Seahawks are totally in on Lock and trust him.
"Every NFL team says it has faith in its backup QB once he's pressed into action. That's true with Seattle and Drew Lock, who will start Sunday and perhaps beyond as Sam Darnold deals with a glute injury," he says.
Defensive tackle Leonard Williams has also said glowing things about him.
"We believe that he's the best second-string quarterback in the league," he said, per ESPN, on Wednesday. "I remember that Eagles game a few years back where he stepped up and won us the game. He's done it and shown it multiple times now. That has instilled a lot of trust in his teammates and his team."
