Saints reporter has bad news for possible Steelers-Chris Olave trade

With the Pittsburgh Steelers in need of a replacement for wide receiver George Pickens, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, a rumor suggests the team is pursuing a trade for New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave.

The rumor comes from Adam Crowley of 93.7 The Fan, who revealed that a source told him the Steelers are pursuing the 24-year-old wideout in a trade with the Saints.

However, Saints beat reporter Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football has some bad news for Steelers fans hoping to see this trade.

Underhill writes that not only would it take a lot to trade for Olave, he also doesn't think it would make any sense for New Orleans to deal its best wideout.

"You see a team with a good player, you assume they stink, so you start shopping their list," he explained. "Bad teams, rebuilding teams, are usually willing to trade assets. So, maybe the Saints end up there."

"I also don't think it would make a lot of sense for New Orleans to trade Chris Olave unless it is already clear that he'll be leaving. But even then, unless the return is crazy, why would you trade him right now?" Underhill added.

To be quite honest, it's hard to argue with Underhill's take here.

In the wake of Derek Carr's retirement, the Saints are likely to start one of their young quarterbacks this coming season, a group that includes 2025 second-round pick, Tyler Shough.

That means the Saints need all hands on deck at wide receiver, where Olave is far and away the No. 1 target. Without a lot behind him, the Saints can ill-afford to trade Olave, who stands to be a huge asset to whoever is under center.

Olave's deal also runs through 2026, so there really isn't any rush to trade him right now.

On the flip side, Olave may not be keen on going through more lean years, which is certainly possible given the lackluster roster and uncertainty at quarterback.

Also, there are concerns about his career longevity after he's suffered multiple head injuries during his time in the NFL. Olave has suffered four confirmed concussions over three seasons in the league.

We tend to believe the Saints will hold on to Olave, but never say never in the NFL.
