It's not clear if the Buffalo Sabres will actually trade Devon Levi.
But if they still want to move the young goalie from what looks like a crowded depth chart, they now have an obvious comparison.
On Friday night, the Detroit Red Wings traded Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth.
In return, the Red Wings got the No. 23 overall pick in the 2026 first round.
All along, Cossa and Levi have been mentioned somewhat side-by-side. They're the two younger goalies with potential available in a trade market that has a handful of older goalies involved.

Cossa may have more hope around his future, but he also is less proven. Levi has played more professional games, including in the NHL.
The problem for the Sabres and Levi is that he was worse in 2025-26 at the AHL level than he was the season prior. That's not ideal, particularly in trying to assess his trade value.
But now Buffalo knows what a deal for a player like Levi could look like.
With the first round over, they wouldn't know an exact pick slot they'd be getting as a future first or second-rounder. But it's a good starting point.

The Sabres have been floated as a possibility for some of the big goalie names available this offseason, but it's not yet clear whether they'll actually get any of those done.
They got solid contributions in 2025-26 from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon, and even from Colton Ellis, but none of those feel like Stanley Cup-winning goalies. Neither does Levi, at least at this point.
And if the Sabres could get a high draft pick back for Levi, that may be a move to try and get done.
