The San Antonio Spurs made one of the more interesting selections of the 2026 NBA Draft by choosing Jayden Quaintance with the No. 20 overall pick. Despite concerns surrounding his recent injury history, the Spurs showed tremendous confidence in the talented forward.

The Spurs believing Quaintance's long-term potential outweighed the risks associated with his recovery. While San Antonio is fully committed to supporting Quaintance throughout his rehabilitation process, there was one request from the rookie that the organization quickly turned down.

After wearing No. 21 throughout his college career, Quaintance hoped to continue wearing the same jersey number with the Spurs. However, he revealed during a recent press conference that the franchise wasted no time informing him that the iconic number would not be available.

“Nah, they cut that off pretty quickly, I'm not going to lie. As soon as I got drafted they were like, ‘Here’s a couple number options that you’ll have.’ They killed that dream pretty fast,” the rookie said.

The reason was hardly surprising. No. 21 belongs to Spurs legend Tim Duncan, whose legacy remains unmatched in franchise history. Duncan spent all 19 seasons of his Hall of Fame career in San Antonio, winning five NBA championships and two MVP awards. The Spurs retired his jersey in 2016.

Instead, Quaintance is expected to wear No. 22 as he begins his NBA career. Given the confidence San Antonio showed by selecting him despite his injury concerns, the rookie is unlikely to have many complaints.

Once viewed as a consensus five-star recruit and projected lottery pick, Quaintance unexpectedly slid to the latter part of the first round before the Spurs invested in his long-term upside. The organization now plans to focus on his rehabilitation and ensuring he is fully healthy before making his professional debut.
