The MCU has undergone many changes after Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019. After the Infinity Saga was wrapped up, Marvel Studios hasn't been able to replicate the same level of success in their film and television projects. According to Kevin Feige, the studio president, the quality of the productions has been quite inconsistent during the Multiverse Saga, and the company has been too much of a producer.
With Disney modifying its content strategy and decreasing the number of its releases, Marvel is willing to make its storytelling more efficient and to bring back the narrative of the shared universe to the first level.
In light of this change, the return of the Russo brothers, who are behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, to help shape the MCU's future is a rumor that has been widely circulated.
The Russo Brothers are currently filming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the two big next ensemble movies in the franchise, and will reportedly be in touch after Secret Wars wraps up Phase Six for further involvement.
The directors are going to be in charge of the artistic vision of the next projects that they will be internally calling the Mutant Saga according to a report by The Cosmic Circus on November 11, 2025.
Are the Russo Brothers returning to the MCU? Details explored

The outlet talks about the directors becoming members of what insiders call Marvel Parliament, a group in charge of long-term story planning within the MCU.
They will look after the storyline continuity, uphold the uniformity of plotlines, and prevent the narrative splitting, which was one of the main issues of the Multiverse Saga.
The reintroduction of the Russo Brothers in a leadership role has been due to the creative team’s proven track record of handling complex, large-scale ensemble narratives.
The board sees the brothers’ work on the last two films of the Infinity Saga, which not only effectively interwove multiple character arcs but also maintained a cinematic balance, as a template for how to grapple with interconnected narrative strands in the franchise’s next phases.
The Cosmic Circus report further suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic-related disruptions significantly influenced the delay of Marvel's schedule for development. The delayed production and changed release plans resulted in the fact that the content was released before it was fully ready, thus causing inconsistencies in the broader storyline.
Less than half of the projects that were released since 2020 are said to be the direct contributors to the overarching Multiverse Saga narrative. The return of the Russo Brothers is one of the reasons why the next MCU storytelling cycle will have structure and focus, and is thus positioned as a corrective measure.

What is the Avengers: Secret Wars about?
Avengers: Secret Wars is the second of the two MCU films that will be directed by the Russo Brothers, following Avengers: Doomsday. The movies are both based on the Avengers comics by Marvel, and apart from being the fifth and sixth main Avengers movies, they will be the 39th and 40th MCU installments.
The two works will be produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO, the Russo Brothers' production company, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The Avengers: Doomsday, heavily features the cast of characters, the likes of Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey, who was last Tony Stark/Iron Man, reportedly will be seen as a new character in a villainous role, Doctor Doom. The story is about the Avengers forcibly recruiting the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the X-Men to stop Doom.
December 18, 2026, is the day when Avengers: Doomsday will come out, while a year later, on December 17, 2027, Avengers: Secret Wars will be released.

Avengers: Doomsday has been filmed at Pinewood Studios, England, in April-September 2025, while the shooting of the Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for the middle of 2026.
Both will be edited by Jeffrey Ford with music by Alan Silvestri; Ford and Silvestri are returning to the MCU after their previous work on Infinity War and Endgame.
During the San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel first unveiled that the final two chapters of the Multiverse Saga would be Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. However, after Jonathan Majors' exit as Kang the Conqueror, the direction was changed.
The project was reworked with Waldron becoming the writer of both upcoming Avengers movies, and the plot moving away from Kang.
