Kuldeep Yadav struck immediately after tea by dismissing Ryan Rickelton, caught behind on Day 1 of the second Test between India and South Africa at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday, November 22. The left-arm wrist-spinner bowled a flighted delivery that drifted in and landed on the full length, marginally outside off, that spun away from the batter. Rickelton went forward for a lazy drive and got an outside edge as skipper Rishabh Pant completed a sharp catch.
Rickelton departed for 35 runs off 82 balls, which included five boundaries. With the scalp, Kuldeep helped the Men in Blue reduce South Africa to 82/2. The dismissal came in the 28th over of the Proteas’ first innings and the second ball after tea break, which was taken before lunch break to protect playing time at the northeastern venue. The sporting venue is hosting its first-ever Test match.
Watch the dismissal below:
Kuldeep Yadav was equally impressive in the first Test in Kolkata, picking up four wickets. He had also picked up 12 wickets against the West Indies in a two-match series last month.
Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav remove South Africa openers inside 28 overs on Day 1
Indian bowlers had to toil hard to break the 82-run opening partnership between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton before Jasprit Bumrah knocked over the former on the stroke of tea. Markram looked good for his 38 off 81 balls but failed to consolidate. Soon, Kuldeep Yadav removed Rickelton.
At the time of writing, SA were 92/2, with Tristan Stubbs and skipper Temba Bavuma at the crease.
The tourists stunned India by winning the series opener in Kolkata. With a 30-run victory, they took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. It was India’s fourth loss in six home Tests since Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach last year. Team India will be looking to win the Test and avoid a series loss, having lost to New Zealand 0-3 at home last year.
Notably, Rishabh Pant has been leading the side in the absence of Shubman Gill (stiff neck). The hosts have made two changes. Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy returned to the playing XI. The duo replaced Gill and Axar Patel, respectively.
