Reds place 19 home run All-Star third baseman on waivers

The Cincinnati Reds are out of the postseason race and have their sights set on 2027. 

They've made a few very notable roster adjustments before clubs can carry 28 players on their respective rosters, starting Sept. 1. 

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Reds have placed third baseman Eugenio Suarez and outfielder TJ Friedl on waivers. 

"MLB’s other 29 clubs can claim either player during a 48-hour period before the waivers expire. The likelihood is both will clear and remain with the club, unless the Reds move to cut ties by designating one or both for assignment," Rosenthal wrote. 

The Reds hoped Suarez would be their top power hitter that helps lead the NL Central club back to the postseason for the second consecutive year.

But the two-time All-Star has struggled at the plate, hitting .208/.295/.410 with 19 home runs and a .705 OPS. 

"The moves, at least in part, are an attempt by the Reds to save money. Suárez, 35, is owed slightly less than $3 million for the rest of the season; Friedl, 31, slightly more than $700,000," Rosenthal added. "Neither generated significant interest at the trade deadline. Neither is expected back next season." 

Suarez and Friedl can suit up for the Reds during the 48 hours they are available on waivers.
