There may be no hitter better with a bat in hand right now than Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain.
McLain is vying for a starting job for manager Terry Francona's club after posting a dreary .643 OPS in 147 games last season. He finished fifth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2023.
Spring training is the best time for hitters to work on their swing and make mechanical adjustments, but McLain looks like he's ready for Opening Day.
No one is having a better spring than Matt McLain:

Those are MLB The Show-like numbers for the 26-year-old and former two-time first-round draft pick.
McLain's spring training competition
The left side of the Reds' infield is set in stone. Elly De La Cruz will start at shortstop, and Eugenio Suarez is back at third base after smashing 49 home runs last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners.
However, Suarez could spend most of his time at DH because of Ke'Bryan Hayes' excellent glove at the hot corner.
Given McLain's spring numbers, he should have the early edge for the starting job at second base. Spencer Steer and top prospect Sal Stewart are both capable of playing at second and first base, and veteran Garrett Hampson is in camp as a non-roster invite.
