It's never too late to add more depth to a bullpen.
According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Boston Red Sox and veteran left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe have agreed to a one-year, Major League contract.
Coulombe's new deal means that Boston will have to create an opening on the 40-man roster. The 36-year-old made his MLB debut in 2014 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has spent time with five different clubs, most notably the Athletics and two separate stints with the Minnesota Twins.
A midseason trade at last year's deadline sent Coulombe from the Twins to the Texas Rangers, and he posted an impressive 2.30 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 43 combined innings with the two clubs.
Coulombe's potential role in Boston's bullpen
Coulombe is not a high-velocity arm, proven by his 90.3 mph average fastball velocity in 2025. That ranked in the sixth percentile across the Majors, so he primarily depends on a cutter and sinker to induce outs.
Closer Aroldis Chapman's role at closer is secure, as Coulombe joins the Red Sox as one of three lefties in the projected bullpen on Opening Day. Jovani Moran is the third lefty reliever on Boston's depth chart, but the 28-year-old has just 95 Major League innings under his belt.
Manager Alex Cora could use Coulombe in long relief or high-leverage situations against opponents' best left-handed swingers.
