UNC great stuns fans by announcing boycott of Bill Belichick's team

Former North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams says he plans to boycott Tar Heels football games in 2026, publicly criticizing the direction of the program under head coach Bill Belichick.

As one of the most productive quarterbacks in recent Tar Heels history, Williams took to social media to air out his frustration. The UNC alum wrote that he will not attend games this season because of concerns about what he has heard regarding the program.

“I will not be attending any UNC football games this year! The things I’m hearing man I would have never thought,” Williams wrote on X.

Williams was a two-time All-ACC selection and led North Carolina to the ACC Championship Game during the 2015 season. After finishing his college career in 2015, he briefly spent time in the NFL before continuing his professional career in the CFL.

For now, nobody has commented on what sparked Williams to air his concerns publicly rather than addressing them privately. But there was a lot of chatter online about the current state of UNC under arguably the greatest coach in NFL history.

One fan replied that Williams should not “sabotage the very same school and program that gave you a chance.” Williams responded with a short message telling the commenter to “shut up.”

The exchange added further speculation about unrest surrounding Belichick’s first offseason leading the Tar Heels. The six-time Super Bowl–winning coach was hired to bring an NFL-style structure to the program. It was a big move that generated national attention.

Neither Belichick nor the university has publicly addressed Williams’ comments. However, the situation leaves questions about tensions between the alumni base and the direction of the program in Chapel Hill.
