The Boston Red Sox made a significant step in the right direction this season, advancing to the playoffs for the first time in years and finally getting their team into championship form. Now, one of their biggest goals of the offseason is finding a No. 2 pitcher to pair with Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer believes that the Sox can find their No. 2 in a No. 1. Specifically, THE No. 1: Detroit Tigers two-time Cy Young Tarik Skubal.
“Even if they are in the middle of a contention window, cashing in the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner for a massive haul now arguably makes more sense than letting his walk year play out…To this end, multiple top-100 prospects would be a must. The Tigers could also try to replace him in their 2026 rotation, either with an MLB-ready prized pitching prospect or someone who already has No. 1 credentials in the bigs…Prediction: Traded to Red Sox,” Rymer wrote.
This past season, Skubal posted a 13-6 record, an ERA of 2.21, 241 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.891 over 195 innings pitched. He also won his second Cy Young in two years, besting Crochet, who came in second.
With that in mind, a 1-2 punch of Skubal and Crochet would be legendary. However, the only way this trade seems feasible is if the Sox can accept Skubal’s $400 million price tag, as he has only one year left on his current contract.
If the Sox don’t want to lose multiple top-100 prospects for a rental, they need to re-sign Skubal. If they can, then they need to start negotiations ASAP.
