Red Sox DFA two right-handed pitchers on Tuesday

The Boston Red Sox had until Tuesday evening to add players to their 40-man roster to protect them from the MLB's Rule 5 Draft, and they added two players - right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins and outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Dobbins and Garcia, Boston designated right-handed pitchers Isaiah Campbell and Bryan Mata for assignment.

Campbell, 27, joined the Red Sox last November via trade, as Boston acquired him from the Seattle Mariners for infielder Luis Urias. Campbell appeared in eight games for the club in 2024 (all out of the bullpen), and in those outings, he posted a 16.20 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and an 8.1 K/9 over 6 2/3 innings. He was placed on the injured list in July with elbow inflammation and never returned.

Mata, 25, signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2016 at just 17 years old. At one point, he was considered one of Boston's top pitching prospects, but after multiple injuries, he appeared in just 11 games across four levels in the Red Sox's system in 2024. In those outings, he posted a 4.37 ERA, 1.412 WHIP and a 7.9 K/9 over 22 2/3 innings.
