Red Sox could land $80 million Rafael Devers replacement in blockbuster trade

The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers away to the San Francisco Giants after moving into position to make a postseason push. The Red Sox could look to keep their postseason hopes alive with another trade.

According to MassLive's Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox "intend to buy" at the trade deadline. They now have an opening for an everyday designated hitter. While they are not going to find a player that matches Devers' production, they could find a replacement who still brings elite production.

The Atlanta Braves are in danger of falling out of contention if they do not hit their stride in the coming weeks. If that's the case, some of their stars could be on the move. FanSided's Christopher Kline suggested the Red Sox replace Devers with Marcell Ozuna, who will be a free agent after the year.

"This isn't exactly a long-term solution, but the Atlanta Braves continue to stall outside the postseason picture in the National League," wrote Kline. "Alex Anthopoulos has never been one to sell at the trade deadline, but if Atlanta feels its World Series odds slipping away, there's no reason to keep Ozuna. He's a free agent at season's end and he will get paid more than he's actually worth as an aging DH.

"Even as a short-term solution, this would at least provide the Red Sox with another veteran slugger to prop up a young lineup and give Boston a fighting chance in the AL East. Ozuna is coming off his best campaign to date in 2024. The numbers a less gaudy in 2025, but a slash line of .253/.388/.422 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI still gets the job done. Boston always needs more right-handed slug, too."

Ozuna signed a four-year, $65 million deal with the Braves before the 2021 season. He had a $16 million player option for this season that he exercised. If the Braves fall out of contention, they may be willing to get something in return for Ozuna before they presumably let him walk in the winter.
