Ranking the NFL’s best free agent defensive players available in 2026, from Trey Hendrickson to Bobby Wagner

2 hours ago 3

NFL free agency in 2026 has loads of defensive help available for teams wanting to spend and do a quick overhaul, the way the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks did last offseason. Those teams made key additions through quantity and quality on their way to surprising Super Bowl runs.

From edge rusher to linebacker to cornerback to safety, there's impactful veteran talent to boost run and pass defenses alike from every level. Expect a lot of deals to get done on this side of the ball when the legal tampering period starts at noon next Monday, March 9.

With that in mind, here's a look at the best defenders available on the free agent market in 2026.

FREE AGENCY: Ranking top 100 free agents, best players available by position

NFL free agent defensive player rankings 2026

1. Trey Hendrickson, EDGE, Bengals (age: 31)

Hendrickson's age and 2025 injury concerns might give some teams pause, but he was still that high-energy, productive pass rusher when healthy last season. He should help a winning playoff-caliber team best.

2. Devin Lloyd, LB, Jaguars (age: 27)

Lloyd, a first-round pick in 2022, should have a robust market as a difference-making, speedy and rangy playmaker. Watch for the Raiders and Cowboys most.

3. Jaelan Phillips, EDGE, Eagles (age: 26)

Phillips going to the Ravens is something to watch with his former Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver here. If not, he would be a good, well-rounded pass rusher to keep for Vic Fangio.

4. Devin Bush, LB, Browns (age: 27)

This other Devin to fill a big hole at linebacker is much like Lloyd, except with a stronger speciality as a cover man.

5. Jaylen Watson, CB, Chiefs (age: 27)

Watson has a chance to return after the team traded Trent McDuffie to the Rams, but that also might be an indication the Chiefs don't want to spend too much at corner. At 6-2, 197 pounds, he is a big physical cover man who is also an asset vs. the run.

6. Odafe Oweh, EDGE, Chargers (age: 27)

Oweh might go right back into a Ravens uniform after that same team traded him in the middle of last season. The first-rounder broke out in Los Angeles in the defensive scheme of Jesse Minter, whose work made him the new coach in Baltimore.

7. Leo Chenal, LB, Chiefs (age: 25)

Chenal is an appealing, rare upfield-burst linebacker to help a lot of teams vs. the run and as an inside pass rusher and also handles himself moving well laterally in coverage. Division rivals Denver and Las Vegas should have an eye on him.

8. Alontae Taylor, CB, Saints (age: 27)

Taylor (6-0, 199 pounds) is another big corner who has blossomed into a sound all-around defender. He can be a nice upgrade back with Dennis Allen in Chicago.

9. Jamel Dean, CB, Buccaneers (age: 29)

Dean has proved his worth to Tampa Bay as both an inside and outside cover man, but his age says he can be the savvy coverage leader elsewhere.

10. Nakobe Dean, LB, Eagles (age: 25)

No relation to Jamel, this Dean will get a lot of buzz right up there with Lloyd and Bush in doing a lot for a team inside, but he's just a little better suited for a 3-4 look.

11. Boye Mafe, EDGE, Seahawks (age: 27)

Mafe still has untapped pass-rush upside but he has developed into a well-rounded player and reliable big asset vs. the run.

12. D.J. Reader, DT, Lions (age: 31)

Speaking of "vs. the run", Reader has made that his calling card, bouncing around in inside rotations. The 6-3, 330-pounder will keep doing that for another team.

13. Riq Woolen, CB, Seahawks (age: 26)

Woolen is a big (6-4, 210 pounds), big-play cornerback who can add some needed ballhawking to a secondary, even if that can also come with some sizable lapses.

14. Calais Campbell, DT, Cardinals (age: 39)

Campbell is a future Hall of Fame ageless wonder who keeps using his wingspan (6-8, 315 pounds) to dominate fronts as a unique inside engulfing pass-rush and run-stopping presence.

15. Jaylinn Hawkins, S, Patriots (age: 28)

Hawkins plays bigger than his 6-1, 208-pound frame vs. the run and blossomed to make more plays on the ball in coverage, too.

16. Khalil Mack, EDGE, Chargers (age: 34)

The future Hall of Famer and former superstar Raider and Bear still wants to play in the league and can help any winning 4-3 or 3-4 base team.

17. Kamren Curl, S, Rams (age: 26)

Curl, the former Commanders star, plays in coverage like a cornerback at times and remains a physically aggressive playmaker on the ball.

18. Kevin Byard III, S, Bears (age: 32)

Byard should want to stay in Chicago after winning his second league interception title (with 7 picks) under Dennis Allen. He would be the priority over younger safety-mate Jaquan Brisker.

19. Joey Bosa, EDGE, Bills (age: 30)

Bosa has some big-time energy left in the tank when healthy, which is more often now that he's seen more as a situational pass-rush force at his age. He would be a good fit with the Packers.

20. Bobby Wagner, LB, Commanders (age: 35)

Wagner is filed under Campbell and Mack as a future Hall of Fame defensive player who doesn't seem to slow down with relentless impact. He remains durable and dominant vs. the run and hasn't lost too much in coverage despite his age.
