As 2025 draws to a close, Indian cricket witnessed a mix of results, reflecting both the highs and lows of a demanding year. The men’s team concluded their cricketing series for the year earlier this month, clinching a 3-1 victory in the five-match T20I series against South Africa.
Meanwhile, the women’s team will round off their year on December 30 with the final match of the five-game T20I series against Sri Lanka. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side has already stamped their authority on the series by winning the first four matches and will look to complete a clean sweep of the Island nation in Thiruvananthapuram.
Overall, 2025 delivered several historic highs for Indian cricket, with both the men’s and women’s teams lifting silverware. On that note, here’s a look at the five best moments of Indian cricket in 2025.
#5 India women’s U19 team successfully defending the World Cup crown
Earlier this year, Malaysia hosted the second edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in January-February. Defending champions India once again displayed their dominance in the tournament, winning all of their group and Super Six matches.
In the semifinal, India defeated England by nine wickets while chasing 114. In the final, they went on to beat South Africa by nine wickets while chasing 83, successfully defending their title under the leadership of Nikita Prasad. Gongadi Trisha was named the Player of the Tournament for scoring 309 runs and taking seven wickets.
#4 Defeating Pakistan three times on the way to winning the Asia Cup 2025
Unlike the 2023 edition, which was played in ODIs and won by India under Rohit Sharma, the 2025 Asia Cup was held in the T20 format. In the 2025 tournament, India were placed in Group A, where they defeated Pakistan, the UAE, and Oman.
In the Super 4s, India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, maintained their momentum by once again defeating Pakistan, as well as overcoming Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In the final on September 28 in Dubai, India faced Pakistan for the third time in the tournament. The Men in Blue emerged victorious once more, chasing 147 to win by five wickets and successfully defending their Asia Cup title.
#3 Shubman Gill’s side recording the smallest margin of victory (by runs) in a historic Test against England
India traveled to England for a five-match Test series running from June to August, marking Shubman Gill’s first assignment as Test captain. The team competed without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom had retired from the format before the series.
Team India showed remarkable resilience throughout the series, but England entered the final Test at The Oval leading 2-1. In their first innings, India were bowled out for 224, and England responded with 247, taking a 23-run lead. In their second innings, the visitors scored 396, with Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scoring with 118, setting England a target of 374.
At one point, England were 301/3, but Indian bowlers produced a stunning comeback to bowl out the hosts for 367. Mohammed Siraj took five wickets as India recorded their smallest-ever margin of victory in Tests, winning by just six runs to draw the series 2-2.
#2 Men in Blue clinching the third ICC Champions Trophy title
The 2025 Champions Trophy was hosted in Pakistan, with India playing their games at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE. Placed in Group A, the Men in Blue topped the table by defeating Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand.
In the semifinals, India chased down 265 against Australia to win by four wickets, with Virat Kohli earning the Player of the Match for his 84 off 98 balls. In the final, India faced the Black Caps, who posted 251. Captain Rohit Sharma guided the chase with 76 off 83 balls, claiming the Player of the Match award as India secured victory by four wickets with an over to spare, lifting their third ICC Champions Trophy title.
#1 Women’s ODI World Cup triumph under Harmanpreet Kaur
The first and perhaps the most memorable moment for Indian cricket this year was the women’s team winning their maiden ODI World Cup title. The Women in Blue finished fourth in the points table with seven points from as many games, securing a place in the semifinals.
In the semifinal at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India faced Australia, who posted 338 runs. India scripted a historic victory, achieving the highest successful chase in women’s ODI history by five wickets with nine balls remaining, thanks to Jemimah Rodrigues’ unbeaten 127 off 134 balls.
In the final, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side faced South Africa. Batting first, India scored 298/7 in 50 overs. In response, Deepti Sharma starred with the ball, taking five wickets as the Women in Blue won by 52 runs at DY Patil Stadium on November 2, clinching their maiden World Cup title.
