The Houston Rockets have been doing okay without a true star guard to bring the ball up, going 3-2 in their first five games. However, they may want to fix that problem ASAP if they want to truly be playoff contenders.
Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus believes so as well, predicting Houston creates a three-team trade that nets them two-time All-Defensive and NBA champion Derrick White.
The trade would look like this:
Houston Rockets get: Derrick White (from Celtics), Haywood Highsmith (from Nets), $5 million trade exception (Reed Sheppard)
Boston Celtics get: Reed Sheppard (from Rockets), Jalen Wilson (from Nets), 2029 first-rounder (via Rockets), $28.1 million trade exception (Derrick White)
Brooklyn Nets get: Fred VanVleet (from Rockets), 2027 first-rounder (via Rockets)
“The Rockets didn't rush to replace VanVleet before the season with the limited number of available players (the best option was Keon Ellis)...White has championship experience, is comfortable at both guard spots, shoots well and plays defense. He's expensive, but the Rockets stay under the first apron this year and can try to negotiate a deal with Tari Eason (restricted) this summer that keeps the franchise under the projected second apron,” Pincus wrote.
So far this season, White is averaging 15 points, 3.6 rebounds, four assists, 1.4 steals, and one block per game. His defense is pretty unmatched, and his ability to shoot from anywhere outside the arc is elite as well.
Hopefully, the Rockets realize what an asset an NBA champion can be and start crafting an offer right away.
