The Pittsburgh Pirates know what they have in Konnor Griffin.
The shortstop phenom is ranked the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball by every major outlet. He hasn't made his MLB debut yet, but that's coming shortly, and he's still only 19 years old.
And with that in mind, the Pirates want to do what they can now to ensure they have Griffin around for as long as possible.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that the Pirates want to give Griffin a contract extension before he even steps foot in the big leagues.
"His five-tool skillset is something all 30 teams yearn to acquire, and the Pirates have him for next to nothing," writes the Post-Gazette's Noah Hiles. "Griffin’s young age also offers a greater likelihood for him to be around for more than just the length of his rookie contract. Anything south of a 10-year extension would allow him to still reach free agency before his 30th birthday. Such a deal makes plenty of sense for both parties, and per conversations with numerous sources, both parties are indeed open toward making this happen."

Griffin hit two home runs on Tuesday when the Pirates played the Boston Red Sox in Spring Training, the second going about as far as any homer will go the entire spring.
There really isn't anything he can't do. Prospect writers have compared him to Mike Trout as far as how much of a can't-miss player he is.
It wouldn't be unprecedented for a player to get a contract extension before reaching the major leagues, although it'd be something new for the Pirates. And while it certainly comes with a conceptual discount, Griffin would surely still call for plenty of money in the back end of the deal.
Could Griffin somehow be a bust? Sure.
But players like him, with this much hype and ability, don't come around too often. It would behoove the Pirates to do whatever they can to get such a deal done, no matter the years or the dollars.
