Phillies pegged as top landing spot for $8.9 million three-time Cy Young, two-time World Series champ to form 1-2-3 punch with Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler

The Philadelphia Phillies have taken a couple blows this offseason, when they lost Ranger Suarez to free agency, and missed out on Bo Bichette. However, Suarez honestly hurts more at the moment, as right now they still have Zack Wheeler rehabbing, and only Cristopher Sanchez as a true star in their rotation.

They need someone to fill out depth in their rotation, someone who’s a proven stud. Fansided's Christopher Kline predicts the Phillies will find their answer in signing a veteran starter who’s on his way to the Hall-of-Fame, in three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer.

“Philadelphia's positional depth chart is more or less settled, but the rotation needs reinforcements. Ranger Suárez's departure leaves the Phils without a clear five-man group as Zack Wheeler rehabs his elbow. Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo and Aaron Nola are locks, but who's next up? Taijuan Walker shouldn't be a 30-game starter at this point in his career. Andrew Painter offers monster upside, but struggled in Triple-A last season. His readiness is questionable…Scherzer fits the bill. He'd serve as a simple one-year investment and a stopgap until Wheeler returns from the IL. This is probably the best team Scherzer can realistically join. This move wouldn't excite Phillies fans, but it'd fulfill a basic need without long-term baggage,” Rotman wrote. 

This past season, Scherzer posted a 5-5 record, a 5.19 ERA,  82 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.294 over 85 innings pitched. To be fair to him, he was battling injuries, and in the postseason, he showed that Mad Max was still to be feared.

Plus, this would be a good deal for the Phillies financially. As Kline stated, he would only be a one-year deal, with a projected cost of around $8.9 million. For Philly, that could be a steal if Scherzer is fully healthy.

Hopefully, the Phillies find an answer to their rotation, but keeping something like this in the back pocket could be useful if Scherzer doesn’t have a home soon.
