Both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are currently gearing up for their upcoming 2026 season. Amidst those preparations, the Saudi PIF-backed golf league recently introduced its expanded 72-hole competitive format.
Apart from that, the breakaway tour has brought changes to their upcoming Promotions Event at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, which takes place from January 8 to 11, 2026. Latest updates will allow the two top-ranked non-contracted golfers of this event to secure a LIV contract for one year. However, the latest reports suggest that the PGA Tour seems to have a problem with the upcoming event in the United States.
Bob Harrig reported that the American professional golf circuit is reportedly planning to take disciplinary steps against players who participate in the Promotions. According to the Sports Illustrated report, if golfers from the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions or the Korn Ferry Tour compete there, they will be subjected to suspension or exclusion from media rights releases. This claim was also shared by NUCLR GOLF on X (previously Twitter):
🚨❌⛳️ #NEW — The PGA Tour says that any player with PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions or Korn Ferry status who plays in the LIV Golf Promotions event will not receive a media release and will be subject to disciplinary action and / or suspension because the event is taking place in
It's worth noting that apart from this report by Harrig, the American pro golf circuit also holds certain outlines for non-PGAT players. Golfers who have yet to be a part of the PGA Tour or any of the other sanctioned leagues would face consequences in case they compete in the LIV Golf Promotions Event.
Since the upcoming pathway event to the breakaway tour is considered unauthorized, non-PGAT golfers would be banned for a year. Apart from being blacklisted from Tour-sanctioned events, they will also be prohibited from enjoying sponsor exemptions and entering Monday Qualifiers.
"So bad for golf" - Fans react to report regarding PGA Tour's actions against golfers competing in LIV Golf Promotions
Although this update was not confirmed by any Tour official, it quickly gained the attention of the fans on the social media platform. Below NUCLR GOLF's X post, a section of them ended up slamming the PGA Tour over their repeated decisions regarding LIV Golf Promotions. Take a look at some of those comments on X:
"So bad for golf. PGA has to accept that LIV now has market share, and they need to get some terms set out for the game! It’s not going to go back to the PGA monopoly they once had.", someone slammed the PGAT.@NUCLRGOLF So bad for golf. PGA has to accept that LIV now has market share and they need to get some terms set out, for the game! It’s not going to go back to the PGA monopoly they once had.
@NUCLRGOLF This is so stupid. They are independent contractors. The golfers should literally just sue the PGA.
Although the Tour is coming under fire for its reported decisions, in 2023, the scenario was completely different. The Tour granted players to compete in LIV Golf Promotions and this decision was lauded by LIV golfer Patrick Reed.
