Sports writer urges Timberwolves to target disgrunted star point guard

The Minnesota Timberwolves are still finding their rhythm early in the season, ahead of their matchup against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, with a 4-3 record.

The Western Conference runner-ups are looking to build cohesion; however, the team has a hole at the point guard position. The team doesn't have a true point guard, with Donte DiVencenzo playing out of position and a 38-year-old Mike Conley who is no longer the player he used to be.

In an effort to address the team's point guard issue, CBS Sports writer Sam Quinn suggested the Timberwolves trade for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant.

"Oh, you don't think the Timberwolves would make a move this drastic right after reaching the Western Conference finals? Well, they did so a year ago when they traded Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo," wrote Quinn.

"Constructing the trade would be difficult. The Timberwolves are effectively pick-less. Some combination of the youngsters would be a start, but realistically, just to match salary, one of the older front-court players would have to be in the deal. As Memphis has no need for either Randle or Rudy Gobert, this would have to become a three-team deal."

A hypothetical deal for Morant would likely require the Timberwolves to part ways with several key players, notably Donte DiVencenzo and Julius Randle, to match the Grizzlies' asking price.

Rudy Gobert is another possible trade target for the Grizzlies.

Though Morant's statistical numbers are down from the season prior, he remains one of the most dynamic players in the NBA, and a potential pairing with Edwards could create one of the most explosive backcourts in the league, elevating the Timberwolves past the Western Conference Finals.

Morant's relationship with the Grizzlies' coaching staff has grown rocky as of late. The star point guard was suspended for one game due to conduct detrimental to the team, and the Grizzlies have struggled early in the season, falling to 3-5.
