Pedro Martinez knows baseball, and so when he talks, it's worth listening.
But the latest take by the Boston Red Sox pitching legend about the New York Yankees' lineup is at least a little bit confusing.
This is what Martinez wrote on X on Tuesday night:
"I don't think the Yankees are the totally dominant team they were last year."

Yeah, we need to talk about this.
Is there anyone who would describe last season's Yankees as "totally dominant?"
Yes, they were one of the best run-producing teams in baseball, and maybe Martinez is talking more about offense. The irony of that aspect is that the Yanks have almost the same lineup as last season, which includes trade deadline pickup Ryan McMahon (and Jose Caballero while Anthony Volpe is out injured).
But last season's Yankees were not good at the pitching thing that Martinez knows so well. Their starting rotation was plagued by injuries, forcing them to use guys who never should've been getting major MLB innings. Their bullpen? At times, even worse.
The Yankees didn't even make it to the ALCS, let alone the World Series, which they had played in in 2024.
And even if we assume the Yankees were actually "totally dominant" a season ago, what has Martinez seen so far to persuade him this year is worse? New York's pitching is actually controlling games in an immense way, and it's too early to judge that the bats won't come around and be great again, too.
All in all, just a confusing take. But Yankees fans sure wouldn't mind proving a Red Sox great wrong.
