Jets trade rumor from ESPN reveals possible interest in deal with Packers or Jaguars

1 hour ago 3

It's no secret that the New York Jets need more help at wide receiver.

While Gang Green has a good No. 1 target in Garrett Wilson, there are nothing but question marks behind him.

Third-year wideout Adonai Mitchell, who remains unproven, is currently slated to be the team's WR2, and their top option in the slot is Isaiah Williams, who is also uncemented as a viable WR3.

We've seen Jets general manager Darren Mougey is not afraid to wheel and deal, and we could see that again when it comes to adding a wide receiver.

Jets eyeing trade for Jaguars, Packers WRs?

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, "there have been rumblings" about the Jets making a trade for a wide receiver, and he specifically mentioned Jacksonville Jaguars wideout Brian Thomas Jr. and Green Bay Packers wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks.

"The Jets likely will use at least one of their four draft picks in the top 44 on a receiver, but don't be surprised if they add another veteran to the mix at some point. There have been rumblings about a potential trade, with Dontayvion Wicks and Brian Thomas Jr. among the names bandied about," Cimini reported.

Thomas, who is only 23 and has a 1,200-yard season under his belt, is the more attractive option of the two receivers Cimini mentions, but Wicks would be a welcomed addition and a more established No. 2 than Mitchell.

Is Brian Thomas Jr. available for trade?

Rumors have swirled around Thomas since last season, when he took a big step back following a dynamite rookie campaign.

But there have been differing reports about his availability in a trade this offseason, with SNY's Connor Hughes reporting he is available but ESPN's Adam Schefter says otherwise.

"As for Brian Thomas. I've been told that the Jaguars are not interested in trading him," Schefter said. "They've denied it repeatedly. His name continues to come up in social media circles, floated out there, and again, for whatever reason, it doesn't go away, but every indication that I've gotten back is the Jaguars have no interest in moving on from Brian Thomas, despite all this that's out there."

Jaguars general manager James Gladstone was asked about Thomas trade rumors and called them "fraudulent," so it appears the former first-round pick isn't going anywhere.

"It can be very strange for sure," he said of the rumors. "I care more for what weight that might put on Brian himself when it's something that's entirely out of his control and unnecessary. So, I think that's where my mind would go, if anything. But when it's fraudulent claims, you just keep your mind on what you can focus on and you can actually control and try to do what's best for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

If the Jets were to acquire Thomas, it figures to be an expensive endeavor but one that would be worth it for a team that will have a young quarterback at the helm, whether that be this year or next.

Would Packers trade Dontayvion Wicks?

Had the Packers brought Romeo Doubs back, Wicks likely would have been on the chopping block, but Doubs landed with the New England Patriots in free agency, so a Wick trade becomes less likely.

That said, the Packers still have a crowded situation at wide receiver. We know that Jayden Reed and Christian Watson are going to start, and there is also 2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden, who is expected to take on a bigger role.

If Golden and fellow 2025 pick Savion Williams can be trusted to step up, Wicks could find himself far down the depth chart, although we would peg him as the team's WR4, at worst, going into the offseason.

While we certainly wouldn't rule a Wicks trade out, it's more likely he stays than not given the Packers' need for more depth that stems from the uncertainties with Golden and Williams, and with both Watson and Reed having dealt with injuries previously.
