New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel talks to quarterback Drake Maye (10) during the second quarter at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025.

It's always fascinating to see which teams are after the same player in free agency.

In this case, the New England Patriots beat out the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns for a $42 million signature.

That's what The Athletic's Dianna Russini has reported about the signing of offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.

She writes that the three-year deal he signed with the Pats won out over pursuits by the Giants and the Browns, with the agreement coming late overnight Monday into Tuesday.

In a vacuum, it's easy to make assumptions, although there's no way to know for sure what factored into Vera-Tucker's decision. But the fact that the Patriots just played in the Super Bowl, while the Giants and Browns were both mediocre, has to have helped -- particularly with Vera-Tucker coming from the lowly Jets and looking for his new NFL home.

It's a solid pickup for the Patriots to land the 26-year old, 6-foot-5, 305-pound Vera Tucker.

He was originally a first-round pick, No. 14 overall, by the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft out of USC.

He has started all 43 games he has played for the Jets since 2021, although he missed the entire 2025 season with an injury sustained in the preseason.

The Pats must've felt good enough about Vera-Tucker's injury recovery to shell out this contract, and he'll presumably play one of the offensive guard spots for New England.

The Giants and Browns could certainly have used him, too, but evidently they missed out and will have to look elsewhere to improve their offensive lines.
