Raining down a barrage of Comet in Path of Exile 2 is very fun. You can do it through various means, but for this guide, we’re building around Cast on Critical. If you haven’t used the skill before, it’s a meta-skill that triggers all socket skills after reaching 100% energy. As the same suggests, you need to trigger Critical Hits to charge the skill.
This guide will explain everything about how to set up CoC Comet in Path of Exile 2. We’re going with the new Sorceress Ascendancy, Disciple of Varashta, as she has some useful passives.
Note that this isn't a leveling build guide. We have one for Disciple of Varashta Ascendancy, but you can go with any leveling build you want for the Sorceress.
Path of Exile 2 Disciple of Varashta (Sorceress) CoC Comet build setup
CoC Comet deals incredible damage (Image via GGG)To make it rain comets using Cast on Critical, you’ll need to get as high a Critical Rate as possible. Here’s the final setup with Comet equipped in Cast on Critical.
- Cast on Critical: Comet - Boundless Energy - Energy Retention - Spell Cascade
- Frostbolt: Rapid Casting - Vilenta's Propulsion - Sione's Temper - Magnified Area
- Frost Wall: Spell Cascade - Magnified Area - Icicle - Cooldown Recovery
- Elemental Weakness: Heightened Curse - Magnified Area - Cursed Ground - Prolonged Duration
- Sigil of Power: Cooldown Recovery - Prolonged Duration - Rapid Casting - Magnified Area
- Navira, the Last Mirage: Prolonged Duration - Bidding - Magnified Area - Kurgal's Leash - Cold Mastery
- Mana Remnants: Harmonic Remnants - Remnant Potency - Clarity
CoC Comet has a one-button gameplay loop for the most part. The primary trigger for Comet is Frosbolt, which will fire off multiple projectiles with Sione's Temper. I’ve left out the last support, so you can choose between Multiple Projectiles or something to deal more damage.
Frost Wall is for bosses and rare monsters, as it will trigger Cast of Critical much faster and can even tank projectiles. For even more tankiness, spec into Navira and use her Mirage to avoid getting one-shotted. It also increases your mana regeneration, which is crucial as you aren’t playing Bloodmage.
Use Frostbolt to trigger CoC (Image via GGG)Elemental Weakness and Sigil of Power are also for stronger enemies, and with this setup, you can completely strip enemy elemental resistance. Here’s what the gameplay loop will look like:
- For Mobbing: Use Frostbolt to trigger Cast on Critical, that’s it. It may not sound like much, but with proper setup, a single skill is enough to wipe an entire screen.
- For Bossing: Elemental Weakness and drop Sigil of Power during the boss spawn phase. Then use Frost Wall and Frostbolt to charge up CoC.
Note that Elemental Weakness and Sigil of Power are on a weapon swap for additional benefits and duration. You can find the tree for that in the skill tree setup.
Best itemization choices for CoC Disciple of Varashta in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.4
A decent staff can cost around 2 to 3 Divine Orbs (Image via GGG)Gear is one of the biggest reasons for choosing Disciple of Varashta for the CoC Comet build. The build you want to make will be a lot cheaper compared to a Bloodmage or a Stormweaver. That said, you can always spend hundreds of Divines to min-man your build in Path of Exile 2, but for now, we’re trying to keep it within 10-20 Divines.
Here are the ideal gear stats you’ll want across the board to clear tier 15 maps without any issue:
| Gear | Affixes |
| Weapon (Staff) | - Level of all Spell Skills - Spell Critical Chance - Mana - Extra Damage as Elemental Damage - Cast Speed |
| Helmet | - Energy Shield - % Increased Energy Shield - Resistances - Mana |
| Amulet | - Level of all Spell Skills - Energy Shield/Life - Resistances - Mana Regeneration |
| Armor | - Use Waveshaper |
| Rings | - Added Cold Damage - Mana - Mana Regeneration - Resistances - Item Rarity - Use Snakepit on the Left Hand |
| Gloves | - Energy Shield - % Increased Energy Shield - Resistances - Added Cold Damage |
| Belt (Utility Belt) | - Life - Resistances - Increased Mana/Life Recovery From Flasks |
| Boots | - Movement Speed - Energy Shield - % Increased Energy Shield - Increased Energy Shield Recharge Rate - Resistances |
The ‘Instruments of Power’ Ascendancy passive allows you to equip a Focus alongside a Staff. You can have a Wand with ‘+5 Level of all Skill’ with a ‘+2 Level of all Skill’ for damage on Focus, but a staff with the same stats will be a lot cheaper.
Another source of increasing damage is Rings. Just having tier 3 affixes for ‘Added Cold Damage’ and ‘Critical Damage’ will add a lot more DPS. For the rest of the stats, try to get resistances and mana regen, with the lowest priority to the item rarity. Note that the build is extremely mana hungry, so make sure you have good regen and try to pick up those mana remnants.
The Waveshaper is a great unique for CoC Comet build in Path of Exile 2 (Image via GGG)A decent chunk of Critical Hit Chance will come from either the Staff or the Focus. You can get more across other gear, but targeted stats are often pricey. For now, keep the clothing side of the gear for defense and utility. The build also uses uniques. Here’s what they do:
- Snakepit: This unique ring grants you the ability to fork projectiles. Meaning your Frostbolt will fork into two projectiles on hitting enemies for better crowd control. It also grants up to 25% increased cast speed and 30% increased spell damage.
- Waveshaper: While the amount of armor and ES isn’t impressive on this unique chest piece, you want this for Spirit and the ability to apply mana regen to ES recharge rate. Since you’re also stacking mana, it allows you to use it as more armor, which goes well with Sacred Rituals Ascendancy passive.
Best skill tree setup for Disciple of Varashta in Path of Exile 2
Here's the skill tree for level 90 Disciple of Varashta in Path of Exile 2 (Image via PoB || GGG)For the final part of this CoC Comet guide for PoE2, we have the passive skill tree. Earlier, I mentioned that you need a high Critical Hit Chance, which remains true, but you’ll also need to stay alive. To further boost the stats provided by your gear, you’ll also want to pick up Energy Shield-related nodes.
I started speccing from the Energy Shield side, but Spell Damage is also good. The three main focuses are Critical, Energy Shield, and Cold damage nodes. After swapping to Cast of Critical, you’ll also want to pick up Invocated Efficiency and Energise nodes near Chaos Inoculation.
Another reason for picking Disciple of Varashta is her defensive Ascendancy. The Fourth Teaching and Sacred Rituals allow you to have a much faster Energy Shield recharge in Path of Exile 2, along with gaining additional armor based on your ES. However, I’d recommend getting Instruments of Power as the second pick. You can always respec if there are survivability issues.
