Panthers' Feleipe Franks returns, adding versatility, spark to special teams

An NFL and major-college quarterback who developed a different niche, evolving into a tight end/special teams ace, Feleipe Franks returned to the Carolina Panthers this offseason, bringing his unique skillset.

Special teams coordinator Tracy Smith missed him.

"A contributor every single day, offense and special teams, so (I'm) excited to hve him back around the building," Smith said during Wednesday's teleconference.

Franks made his mark with the Panthers in 2024, competing in 68 percent of special-teams snaps. His previous stop was with the Falcons as a developmental quarterback, attempting four passes from 2021 and '22.

After spending '23 out of the NFL, Franks signed with the Panthers the next season and sparked the special teams with plays that often irritated opponents.

"Love him as a spirit and as an effort player," Smith said.

Franks appeared in 16 games with the Panthers in '24, collecting 10 tackles and recovering a fumble. He had 11 tackles for the Atlanta Falcons last season.

When he became available via free agency last winter, Smith lobbied for Franks' return.

"He had a great season again last year as he had for us," Smith said. "So when the free agent list comes out, you try to get the best guys you can at every single position. My focus is on special teams contributors, of course. So when you're asking who do you want as a tight end, it's hard not to say Feleipe."

Franks participated in Tuesday's opener to the NFL offseason-training activities (OTAs) and absorbed quarterback Bryce Young's "passion."

Smith expects Franks to continue bringing the same "spirit" to special teams.
