The San Diego Padres went out brutally in the NL Wild Card, and then lost their star pitcher Dylan Cease to free agency this offseason. They need to make a move quickly, lest they suffer the consequences of having two major losses back-to-back.
Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes the Padres could replace Cease with an All-Star that’s been put on the trade block: Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.
“Re-signing Michael King was a pleasant surprise, but the Padres still need pitching depth in lieu of Dylan Cease. Freddy Peralta probably represents San Diego's best chance at adding a genuine ace. The Padres are hamstrung by their barren farm system — Milwaukee can expect a lot of fruitful offers for Peralta — but Preller has never shied away from an all-out, go-for-broke maneuver. On an expiring contract, Peralta's trade value is somewhat limited relative to Greene, Gore and other more controllable stars. That at least gives the Padres a hope, a prayer,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Peralta posted a 17-6 record, a 2.70 ERA, 204 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.075 over 176 innings pitched last season. He would immediately take over the role of ace for San Diego and form an insane 1-2-3 punch with a healthy Michael King and Nick Pivetta.
If the Padres could land Peralta, they could then focus on other things they need to address. It puts them in the best possible position to contend with their division rival and the MLB's premier super team, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hopefully, the Padres get something going soon; otherwise, the offseason will end, and they will be in a much worse place than they were in last season.
