San Diego Padres ace Michael King recently said that he hopes by the end of this season, all 30 MLB teams are calling him in free agency.
The Padres don't want it to get that far.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reported that the Padres want to keep King around.
"The Padres are hopeful of re-signing one of two star free-agent starters — and word is the one they’ll likely target is Michael King (one scout says he sees similarities to Greg Maddux)," Heyman said.
King's market value on Spotrac is set as $71.2 million for four years.
This season, King leads the Padres starting rotation with a 2.32 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP heading into his start on Sunday.
The dominant right-hander also has 56 strikeouts in 50.1 innings pitched.

King spent the first five seasons of his MLB career with the Yankees, where he was almost exclusively a relief pitcher.
The Padres brought him aboard for 2024 with the intent of making him a starter, and King responded as well as he possibly could've, putting up a 2.95 ERA in 30 starts.
King turns 30 on May 25, and he likely has a bunch of good years in front of him on an MLB mound.
