Packers urged to sign versatile, ex-Eagles RB who had nose for the end zone with Philly

Marshawn Lloyd’s rookie season is trending towards a red-shirt year for the Green Bay Packers.

The exciting third-round draft pick, who played alongside Caleb Williams at USC, has been snakebitten by injuries and bad luck in 2024. He was slowed by a hip injury during offseason workouts, a hamstring issue during training camp, and an ankle sprain that’s kept him out of action since Week 2 of the regular season. The team opened his 21-day practice window in hopes that he could return for Sunday’s game at Chicago, only for him to miss the trip due to appendicitis

The good news for Green Bay is that veteran back Josh Jacobs is on track for his fourth career 1,000-yard rushing season. The team could use more depth at the position, though, with Lloyd’s recovery time still to be determined and undrafted guys Emmaunel Wilson and Chris Brooks currently in reserve.

For that reason, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report urged the Packers to sign free agent running back Boston Scott as a veteran depth piece for the season’s stretch run. Here was Holder’s take on the potential move:

“With AJ Dillon (neck) already out for the year, Green Bay should consider adding a veteran like Boston Scott to the backfield rotation. The 29-year-old spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason and has recently drawn interest from the New Orleans Saints, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz. In six years with the Philadelphia Eagles, Scott appeared in 75 games, averaged 4.3 yards per carry and caught 71 passes.”

Scott had a knack for the big play during his five-year run in Philly. He’s a legend among Eagles fans for scoring at least one rushing or receiving touchdown in his first nine career games against the New York Giants. He was a versatile player all around, though, doubling as both a kick and punt returner on special teams.

Scott’s nose for the end zone — he’s scored 17 touchdowns in 73 career games — could be useful to Matt LaFleur, who knows how to scheme his playmakers open for opportunities. It would be wise for Green Bay to start looking for outside help at the position, as any injury to Jacobs would be brutal blow to one of the most efficient offenses in the NFL.
